Digital web inkjet is best suited to jobs where plate making and make-ready would take a large share of the cost. Typical examples include short-run books, textbooks, booklets, manuals, newspapers and commercial work with frequent version changes.
It is also a good fit for reprints and low-stock replenishment, because a title can be produced without a minimum order quantity. Publishers can keep a digital file on hand and print copies when needed instead of storing a large offset inventory.
Jobs that need versioned or personalized pages are another strong match. Digital presses can change content between copies or batches without stopping, and inline cutting and stacking deliver finished sheets ready for binding.
For very long runs of a single, stable title, offset may still be the lower-cost option. Many printers run both technologies and route each job according to run length, delivery time and versioning requirements.
