Why Short-Run Book Production Is Moving to Inkjet

Book publishing is moving toward shorter runs, more titles and faster reprints. For printers, this changes the economics of production: offset plates and make-ready take a larger share of the cost as order quantities fall.
Digital web inkjet addresses this by printing directly from a digital file. There are no plates, no ink-key adjustment and no fixed minimum run. A printer can produce 300 copies of one title and 3,000 of another in the same shift, or reprint a title when stock is low instead of holding a large inventory.
Modern production presses combine web widths of 436 to 880 mm with duplex registration of about ±0.2 mm and speeds from 75 to 200 m/min. Inline cutting and stacking turn the printed web into finished sheets, reducing the number of separate finishing steps.
The result is a workflow that complements offset rather than replacing it: offset for long runs, digital inkjet for short runs, reprints, versioned editions and titles that cannot justify a plate change.
