Digital Inkjet and Offset: Choosing the Right Workflow

Offset and digital inkjet are often presented as competing technologies, but most production printers use both. The decision usually comes down to run length, versioning, delivery time and the cost of make-ready.
Offset remains efficient for long runs of a stable title. Once the plates are made and the press is running, the cost per copy is low. Digital inkjet becomes more attractive when runs are short, when a job changes frequently, or when the customer needs copies within a few days.
Digital web presses remove plates and reduce set-up. They also make it practical to print versioned pages, regional editions and variable data in the same run. With duplex registration around ±0.2 mm and inline cutting, the output can go directly to binding.
A practical approach is to route each job to the process that fits it: offset for long, stable runs; digital inkjet for short runs, reprints and frequent title changes. Reviewing the mix regularly helps printers keep both capacity and cost per copy under control.
