Paper Selection for Digital Web Inkjet: What Printers Should Know

Digital web inkjet presses accept a range of uncoated and treated papers, but not every paper performs the same way. Printers should evaluate media before committing a job to production.
Media weight is the first consideration. Production presses typically run offset paper, writing paper, digital paper and newsprint in the 45-160 gsm range, depending on the model. Very light papers require careful tension control, while heavy papers can affect drying and web stability.
Surface treatment influences ink absorption, dot gain and show-through. Treated inkjet papers are designed to hold pigment ink on the surface, while untreated offset papers may require different drying settings or produce a softer image.
A practical test should include the actual job file, the intended ink coverage and the finishing process. Checking registration, drying, abrasion resistance and folding before the run helps avoid surprises on a long shift.
