Variable Data Printing: A Practical Fit for Short-Run Commercial Work

Variable data is often associated with direct mail, but it also has practical uses in booklets, manuals, catalogues and regional editions. Digital web inkjet makes those changes part of the normal production flow.
Because the press prints from a digital data stream, pages can change between copies or batches without plates or a new make-ready. A printer can produce regional versions, updated price pages or individually addressed covers in the same run.
The main requirements are on the data side: a reliable workflow for preparing and merging variable content, a RIP and data path that can sustain the press speed, and a proofing process that catches errors before production.
For short-run commercial work, variable data can add value without a separate printing process. The same press that produces the base document can also produce the versioned pages, which reduces handling and inventory.
